Are the sneakers waterproof and can you use them in winter?

The short answer is "yes". But of course it must be taken with some caveats, which make them best prepared for water and the challenges of winter.

Leather sneakers are both stylish and versatile, making them a popular choice all year round. But when winter approaches with water, snow and damp weather, keeping them in good condition can be a challenge. Fortunately, there are several ways you can protect your leather sneakers so that they stay both dry and beautiful through the challenges of winter.

It is clear that leather shoes can never be completely waterproof if they are not specifically made with materials such as e.g. GoreTex. To protect your sneakers from water and winter weather, you should therefore regularly use a water-repellent spray and make sure to clean them of snow and salt that can damage the materials.

How to protect your leather sneakers against water and winter weather

1. Impregnation

The first and most effective step towards protecting leather sneakers is to impregnate them. Impregnation creates an invisible barrier that helps repel water and dirt. It is important to choose an impregnation spray that has been specifically developed for leather, as it both protects against moisture and cares for the leather. Spray your sneakers evenly and let them dry in a well-ventilated area before wearing them. Repeat the process periodically, especially after exposure to rain or snow.

2. Choose wax-based care products

To further protect the leather, you can use wax-based products. Leather wax creates a protective surface on the shoes that repels water and prevents the leather from drying out or cracking. Apply the wax and massage it into the leather in circular motions. After application, let the shoes rest for a few hours before buffing them up to achieve a nice finish.

3. Keep them clean and dry

Even with impregnation and wax, it is important to keep your leather sneakers clean and dry. After a day out in wet or snowy weather, wipe them gently with a soft cloth to remove dirt, water and road salt. Salt in particular can damage leather and leave unsightly stains, so it's important to take care of this right away. If the leather gets wet, you should let your sneakers dry naturally at room temperature and avoid placing them close to a heat source, as this can dry out the leather.

4. Avoid deep snow and large puddles

Although your leather sneakers may be well protected from normal winter weather, it's still a good idea to avoid deep snow or large puddles. Leather, even when treated, is not invincible and if exposed to too much water it can be damaged. Try to avoid the worst water levels to ensure your sneakers last longer.
